Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) Pass Rate 2023 Half-Yearly

(Estimated Reading Time: 3 minutes)

For aspiring nurses to become licensed in the United States, passing the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) is crucial. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) administers this standardized examination. They also ensure that the nurses have the skills and knowledge to provide patients with safe and effective care.

With the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) launched earlier this year, the NCSBN is more than pleased with its first-quarter pass rate. Before its release, the NCSBN anticipates that the transition to the enhanced exam will yield positive outcomes for candidates. Furthermore, an essential aspect of determining the success of the NGN is its pass rate, which shows the success rate of test takers, which is one of its key features.

Understanding the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) Pass Rate

The NGN pass rate indicates the percentage of candidates that pass the NCLEX on their first try. It is an important indicator that evaluates the effectiveness of nursing education programs and the overall preparedness of nursing candidates. In addition, the passing rate varies annually depending on factors such as exam complexity, candidate pool characteristics, and changes in the healthcare landscape.

First Quarter Pass Rates for Next Generation NCLEX (NGN)

Recently, the NCSBN released the first quarter passing rate results for the NGN. This data came from the candidates who took the April 1 – June 30, 2023 exam. According to the results, the number of registered nurses and licensed practical/vocational nurse applicants who passed the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) exam increased in the first quarter.

NCSBN CEO David Benton RGN, Ph.D., FRCN, FAAN, comments that the exam’s passing rate reflects how effectively the improved examination replicates actual nursing practice. U.S. educated nurses and first-time takers’ passing rate for the NGN has significantly increased compared to the passing rate for the then NCLEX exam of January-March. Similarly, repeating candidates also reflects an increase in passers.

On the other hand, Internationally Educated Nurses taking the exam on their first attempt, despite the lesser number of takers, the passing rate nevertheless indicates a positive passing rate. Below is a brief breakdown of the NGN pass rate of RN NGN takers presented by the NCSBN. The full summary of the results is here.

2023

The increase in passing rate is undoubtedly a notable outcome given the change in the exam format. Along with the introduction of the NGN is the emphasis on making increasingly complex decisions in delivering patient care, called clinical judgment.

Summing-up

As frontline healthcare providers, nurses and their competence is crucial in delivering effective medical services. A high passing rate assures a qualified nursing workforce; it instills confidence in patients and the healthcare system. The NGN pass rate is a critical indicator that evaluates the quality of nursing education programs, applicant preparedness, and nursing practice standards.

Its relevance sheds light on the world of nursing education and its role in ensuring high-quality patient care. Aspiring nurses, educational institutions, employers, and regulatory organizations all have a stake in the NGN pass rate since it influences the future of nursing and healthcare.
