Before acquiring their licensure, the CGFNS Qualifying Exam is a prerequisite in some US states. Only to some, and not to all state boards. The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools, or CGFNS, is responsible for administering this examination.
Nurses outside the United States, classified as first-level nurses who wish to practice their profession in the US, can acquire the certification. In addition, a CGFNS certificate holder has a higher success rate in passing the NCLEX-RN examination compared to nurses outside the United States who do not.
To begin the CGFNS Qualifying exam application process, the foreign healthcare candidate must follow the standard procedure. Here's how to start applying for the CGFNS Qualifying Exam.
CGFNS evaluates an applicant's necessary documents during the initial application. The candidate must meet the standard requirements before proceeding into the next CGFNS Qualifying exam application phase.
Once the candidate's application is approved, they can now be set for the CGFNS qualifying exam at their desired scheduled date. The examination dates are also provided with specific cut-off dates. Moreover, the number of the examination dates will not be as much compared to the NCLEX exam dates held every week.
The IPASS agent will be providing the eligible candidate with other instructions before, during, and after the examination.
This examination measures the applicant's nursing knowledge, both in theory and practice. The qualifying exam primarily covers topics and sub-topics based on patient needs. Applicants should have sufficient understanding of the following topics; basic care and comfort, pharmacological and parenteral therapies, reduction of risk potential, and physiologic adaptation.
When all requirements are met, the applicant is granted the CGFNS certificate. The CGFNS Qualifying Exam uses the exact blueprint as the NCLEX.
Being a nurse in the United States is a coveted position, especially for non-US nurses. Having the privilege of practicing their profession in a quality environment that pays well is a sought-after benefit. Acquisition of the CGFNS Certification is only one step further toward securing a nursing job in the US.
