It’s common knowledge that test questions for licensure exams are often complicated in structure. There is a lot of extra information that actually has nothing to do with the question is asking. At times, you may be confused about what the question is actually asking.
All this information can be overwhelming, especially if you’re a fresh graduate. You will find yourself overthinking even if you’re just taking practice tests or studying on your own.
Here are some strategies you can employ when answering NCLEX-style questions and avoid overthinking!
Read the question carefully. Look for keywords such as “priority”, “best”, “first”, etc. Make sure that you are understanding the question in the right context. Think about the topic or concept the question is about.
Review what you know about the topic and then look at which applies the best for the question. Some questions would ask you to select all that apply, so be extra careful.
This way, it would be easier for you to select among the seemingly correct answers. Now, these answers might be super similar but at least you have less options to confuse you. Usually, you can eliminate up to two answers in multiple choice questions while doing this.
As a tip, you can add the statement that asks the question to the end of the option and see if it comes out as true or false. When the new sentence you create is a true statement, then that would be the right answer.
If you can’t answer a question right away, try to move to the next question and just answer it when you have extra time. Remember that most tests have time limits. It would be easier for you to answer questions if you have taken enough practice tests to train your thinking skills.
