Register with NNAS and Acquire the Advisory Report
The National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS) is composed of 18 Nursing Regulatory Bodies across Canada and is responsible for assessing the credentials of Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs). The next step for IENs is to complete the credential evaluation by submitting their personal information, nursing education, nursing licenses, and work experience.
Once NNAS completes the evaluation, they will issue an advisory report and send it to the nursing regulatory body in the province or territory of your choice. This report aims to determine if the IEN meets the nursing standards of the chosen province or territory.
Apply to the Board of Nursing
Once you have obtained the advisory report or confirmed that the board of nursing you are applying to does not require one, you can begin your application.
During the application process, the board of nursing may request various documents, verifications, and fees. To ensure a smooth process, ensure all required documents are submitted accurately and on time.
Jurisprudence and Online Courses.
Taking the Jurisprudence exam and participating in additional online courses are essential steps for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) in any province or territory in Canada. The Board of Nursing mandates that all IENs pass the Jurisprudence exam and complete related online courses to ensure that nurses are well-informed about legal standards and patient safety.
Taking and Passing the NCLEX-RN Exam
After you submit your application to the Board of Nursing and complete the required online courses and exams, the board will assess whether you meet all the requirements to take the NCLEX-RN exam in their jurisdiction.
Once your eligibility is confirmed, you will receive proof of eligibility via email, allowing you to proceed with the NCLEX exam registration and scheduling process.
If you have already passed the NCLEX exam in another jurisdiction, you only need to request a candidate report and then send it to the board of nursing to which you are applying. This may exempt you from retaking the NCLEX exam.
License Registration Process
After passing the NCLEX-RN exam, internationally educated nurses (IENs) must complete a criminal background check and obtain professional liability insurance, as the Board of Nursing requires.
Criminal Background Check
Each Board of Nursing has a partner agency that conducts criminal background checks on IENs. This process ensures that the applicant has no pending cases or current charges anywhere in the world.
Professional Liability Insurance
The Board of Nursing requires IENs to obtain an insurance policy that protects them from malpractice claims or errors that may occur during their practice.
Once these requirements are fulfilled, the IEN can obtain their RN license in a specific province or territory in Canada and begin practicing as a Registered Nurse.
License Endorsement and Score Transfer Process
License endorsement within Canadian provinces is indeed possible. However, each Board of Nursing has its own specific requirements and qualifications for this process.
Similarly, the score transfer process for NCLEX passers in Australia and the USA is available. This means that internationally educated nurses (IENs) who have already passed the NCLEX exam in either Australia or the USA can use their scores to be exempted from taking the NCLEX exam under Canadian jurisdiction.
