Modified NCLEX

What Are Included In The Modified NCLEX

(Estimated reading time: 3 minutes)

The year 2020 has been a whirlwind year that everything we already planned are being scratched or changed. Despite having many challenges one thing is for sure, our dreams must not be put on hold. This is why the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) continuously make adjustments to NCLEX in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

When the pandemic started NCSBN is very quick to adapt and gave an immediate response on how to maintain the safe being of examinees and the test administrations. Prior changes were already made such as the number of items were shortened, some parts of the exam were removed, safety protocols, and many others. NCSBN was keen on observing whether these modifications affects the test results and they learned that there is no negative impact on the whole testing experience.

So in relation to this, beginning October 1, 2020, NCSBN will be making another modification to NCLEX. Take note that these changes will not be affecting the test plans/topics and the passing standard for the said exam. Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) will still be utilized for the administration and scoring of your exam.

Here are the changes:

  1. Reintroduction of a 15-item pretest. This is not scored.
  2. The minimum number of scored items is 60 with a maximum of 130. But keep in mind that since there is a pretest, exam length will be 75 to 145.
  3. Examination time is 5 hours
  4. The Run out of time rule (R.O.O.T) will now be removed, considering the length of the exam and allotted time for it. Your scores will be computed based on the number of items that you completed.
  5. The research section will also be reintroduced and examinees are highly encouraged to take part in it for the Next Gen NCLEX. Take note that this is not scored and is voluntary.
  6. NCLEX tutorial will be replaced with a general guide and test-taking tips.

If you are going to practice answering the maximum items that is the number of minutes that you practice yourself in answering per item. Doing that enables you to practice your pacing. BUT, do not dwell on the time as long as you have answered the minimum required items. Remember, the most important thing is that you have answered every item with your best ability.

While practicing for the exam questions, one must maintain a reasonable pace. In general, you must practice within 1 to 2 minutes in answering an item to maintain the pacing.

PREPARE! PREPARE!

Do not worry too much about the modifications. Keep in mind that the possible topics will not change, the test plan and level of difficulty is the same. At this point your best way to conquer the NCLEX is to just be well equipped. Do your preparation to the best of your ability and ace that exam! We cannot wait to hear your success story!
