How To Choose A State For Your NCLEX Application?

There are 4 factors that you need to consider to know how to choose a state for your NCLEX application. In addition, which Board of Nursing you are eligible to apply. 

The first factor is:

Date of Graduation

There are some board of nursing which has a specific rule in relation to your graduation date. Say, Texas Board of Nursing rule specifies that you must have graduated within the past 4 years. If you graduated more than the past 4 years, then you must have been employed as a nurse within the past 4 years.  

Another Board of Nursing for example is the Minnesota Board of Nursing. The Board rule is, you can be eligible to apply through  Minnesota Board of Nursing if you graduated within the past 5 years. If you graduated more than the past 5 years then it’s not the employment that you have to consider. However, you are required to take the review course in specific review programs indicated by the Board of Nursing. 

We wonder, what’s with number 4? Why the Board takes into account the 4 years of post graduation? Hmmm, we also do not know. Tell us in the comments section if you have an educated guess on this matter.

Moving forward, the second factor is…

Employment 

You have to look this into consideration. Check first if the Board will require you to have an experience as a nurse or not. By the way, employment wise, Texas Board of Nursing will not accept a work experience if it’s from the academe or if you‘re are working in the BPO industry. Your experience in any nursing department will do, so long as your title is a nurse. The Board will not accept if your position is a clinical instructor. We have verified this information through a call to the Board. It is because there was one client previously who happen to be a Dean of Nursing and wishes to apply for the NCLEX. 

Unfortunately, it cannot be accepted. Good news is, she still can apply through another Board of Nursing! 

The third factor that you must take into account is…

English Proficiency Exam

International Graduate Nurses will be required to provide  proof of their English proficiency by some of the Board of Nursing. Washington Board of Nursing is a good example. The Board will require that you must submit an English Proficiency examination results to them before you will be approved. Nevada Board of Nursing on the other hand, will require that you must submit either TOEFL or PTE. Ohio Board of Nursing will require that you must pass the required TOEFL score prior to approval. 

Some BON will require you an English Proficiency Exam result. However, many don’t require you to sit on IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE. IPASS Processing can definitely sort it out for you. We will find which Board we can easily apply with without worrying on this English proficiency exam prior your NCLEX.

Social Security Number

Your NCLEX application through California BON or New Jersey BON together with some other states is quite tricky. It’s because they will require that you must have a social security number. 

You can only have your social security number if you are already in the USA. In addition, you also cannot apply for the SSN when you are just the USA with a tourist visa. Moreover, your SSN is different from your Philippine SSS. These 2 are entirely different.
